Post Dental Implant Care Instructions
- Since local anesthesia is applied to you during the implant treatment, its effect will continue. Don't try to eat anything during this time because we don't want you to bite your lip or cheek accidentally.
- There will be a sponge or cotton in the mouth; bite hard, keep it in the mouth for half an hour, throw it away, and do not put anything in its place. A small amount of bleeding is normal, do not spit; there is no problem in swallowing.
- Some pain and ache may be felt when the effect of local anesthesia wears off. You should use painkillers recommended by your dentist.
- If stitching is done during the implant treatment, you should be sensitive to the stitched area; try not to use that side while eating and drinking.
- Avoid spitting and rinsing, especially on the first day. This warning is very important because clot formation in that area must remain for the tissues in the stitched area to heal. When you spit and rinse the mouth, you cause the clot to move away from that area, and in this case, bleeding begins again, and the healing time of the tissues is prolonged.
- No brushing, as you will not spit on the first day; you can continue brushing normally from the second day. However, suppose stitches are used on the gums during the surgical operation. In that case, brushing should be done with a soft toothbrush with very sensitive movements, and bacterial accumulation on the stitches should be prevented.
- Do not consume hot foods for 3 days.
- You should stay away from sports activities that will cause bleeding and movements that will increase the heart rate.
- Use the medicines prescribed by your dentist regularly, use the antibiotics until they are finished, and do not leave them halfway. Use painkillers for 2 days; if you do not need them in the next few days, you can stop using them. Do not use any other medicine or herbal product without consulting your dentist.
Smoking and Drinking Alcohol After Dental Implant Surgery
- The most neglected warning is related to smoking and alcohol use. It will prevent many undesirable situations for patients who use cigarettes and alcohol to take a break from these habits for at least 2 weeks or even during recovery.
Swelling after Dental Implant Surgery
- Your face can swell; more swelling may be seen in those with sensitive bodies. Apply the ice pack on the first day, keeping it for five minutes and leaving it for five minutes. This will both reduce the swelling and reduce your pain. The swelling is likely to increase in the first 2 days, so don't worry; it will decrease in the following days. If swelling or pain does not decrease or increase, inform your doctor.
How Long Do the Stitches Take to Dissolve After Dental Implant?
- If the implant placed in the jawbone is covered with stitches, do not use mouthwash until the stitches are removed. If the implant is on the gingiva, an intermediate element, which we call an abutment, may be placed on it; it is useful to wipe around this part with a moistened cotton swab before going to bed.
